Description: Note that the mill's sails are made-up of two main components - three, long thin timbers that run parallel to the stocks and called 'sail whips' and the 17 shorter timbers (that sit at right angles to the whips) called 'sail bars'. Collectively these timbers form the 'sail' and it is to this trellis-type arrangement that the canvas sail material would have been fixed during operation.  Each of the mill's two stocks (the lowest large timber in the photo) carries a sail at each end.
